Friday night I went to dinner and a book signing with several members of the
DFWTea Readers group. While at the bookstore what kind of reader would I be if I didn’t take a moment to do a quick perusal of the shelves?
That quick look had me spotting two books on
Barak Obama. Then I came home to do an online chat with some friends, and again the talk turned to the incoming president. The combination of these two things has me thinking about biographies.

Do you read biographies? How do you decide whom you are going to read about? I personally am not a big biography reader, and if truth be

told can’t remember the last time I read one. However, I did recently buy several about
Lucille Ball. I also have a biography about the late
Princess Diana in my TBR pile. Will I read them anytime soon? Unlikely. However, should I decide to get educated about either of these two women I’m ready!

Sandi,
I don't necessarily read biographies, but I LOVE reference books. Like you, I will never have time to read all of them, but should I need the information or want to browse a few minutes, they are there for me!

I have an eclectic collection of biographies and autobiographies. My favorite is the old George Burns one about his wife Gracie. He really loved her!
Memories of the first biography I read was a collection of stories about women in American history. I think it was one of the reasons I was so surprised when I got to school and found out women didn't play too much in recorded histories. silly men!
I know that one of the first biographies I read was on Helen Keller. Does the Diary of Ann Frank count as a biography or autobiography? (That's also one of the few books I've re-read).
Recently I went shopping with a friend for biographies, and can you believe the bookstore didn't have a biography section? They claim they put them according to subject.
I was really rude, and said so you put Helen Keller in the deaf dumb blind section? I mean, after all I would think some people would be hard to categorize. I have a problem with no straight biography section, even though I won't be wandering there much!
Since that particular bookstore didn't deem it important enough to have a specialized biography section I deemed it not important enough to have to buy anything there but a bookmark I needed because it was orange, and I was doing a secret pal thing, and my person loved orange!
I do read biographies and autobiographies. I pretty much read anything and everything including the cereal box if it's the only reading material in reach! The next biography that I will read is about the actor John Thaw titled The Two of Us: My Life with John Thaw. It's written by his wife. It's a biography / autobiography. I loved Thaw as Inspector Morse.
I have read a biography or two in my life. Even though I enjoy them, I take a long time to read them. I read a biography about Henry VIII's wives; it took me about 9 weeks to read. I learned a lot and found it interesting but it took time away from the other books I like to read.
I used to love biographies when I was younger. There was a series of them for young readers. I tend now to like reference books on history and new age---also some biography.

I have not read any biographies in many years. When I was young I read some about band members from a few old punk bands. Those kept my interest mainly because of the sex , drugs and rock n roll in them. Now I just stick with novels.
