Kate Douglas | Will I get them all written?

I’ve been working on Wolf Tales IX for the past couple of months which, counting the novellas in anthologies, is the seventeenth title in my erotic tales of the Chanku. It’s due for release in January 2010. I remember wondering when I signed the contracts for the third set of novels and novellas if I’d ever get them all written. Now, all of a sudden, the stories I’m contracted for are almost done and I’m waiting to hear from my publisher about plans for more of the series. Characters who were new to me less than four years ago have now become old friends. I know their secrets, their loves, their needs and their fears. I wonder what the future holds in store for them, and I worry about them as if they’re real flesh-and-blood people who matter to me in the way of those I love in real life.

I’m either desperately in need of a good therapist, or totally involved in my imaginary world...and I’m hoping it’s the latter, because it’s such a great world to hang out in. For one thing, it’s filled with fascinating (to me, anyway!) characters with a strong sense of family and a natural code of honor that appeals to me. And, it’s a matriarchal society. Women, quite literally, rule. It begins with their ability to control reproduction and extends to an innate sense of leadership the males are genetically programmed to recognize. While the men are physically stronger and think they’re in charge, when it comes down to a final decision, the women have the last word. For some reason, I find that terribly attractive!

The latest in the series, Wolf Tales VII, has just released. For readers not familiar with the story line, this book might be a good place to begin, as there’s enough backstory to bring everyone up to date. I write the series like an ongoing soap opera, where it’s possible to jump in at any time, but it’s definitely more gratifying to start at the beginning. The one I’m writing now has been nothing but backstory—all the Chanku shapeshifters have gathered for the birth of a new baby, and during the course of the long night, they’re telling the stories of how they first discovered their shapeshifting birthright.

I’m learning things about my characters I never even suspected, so it’s really been a fun book to write. That’s the joy of not plotting. When I sit down to write, every story is a surprise to me. Even more fun, in this particular book I’m telling the stories my readers have asked for—the members of my newsletter were invited to request the stories they wanted to hear, and the response was phenomenal. Wolf Tales IX will be a direct result of their wishes. If you’re at all curious about the series—and if you’re eighteen or over—I have the first chapters of all my books posted at www.katedouglas.com/eroticromance.

Thanks to Fresh Fiction for giving me the chance to blog, and thanks to my readers, who are the only reason I have the privilege of writing my series. I want to wish all of you the very best in the coming year, and don’t forget to make time to read a good book! To help you along I am giving away a copy of Wolf Tales VII on my ONE DAY ONLY blog contest.

Hey Kate, how exciting to have written so many Wolf Tales, and that the birth of a child has brought something new and exciting to the series. Good luck with your latest release, and all the best to you in 2009 :)

Thank you, Stacy. I'm currently writing the story of AJ and Mik's first meeting--in prison, of all places--which is the one the most of my readers requested. The baby (or will it be "babies?") should be arriving any time now!

Wow, I am always in awe of someone who can write a series with that many books and still keep it interesting. I can not imagine that many stories running around in my head. You are awesome. Thanks.

Thank you, Ada...it's always very exciting when a new book releases, the culmination of so much hard work by so many people. Writing it is just the beginning! I'm crossing fingers and toes that my readers enjoy this one.

Me too, Angie. Wolves fascinate me--on a trip to the Northwest this summer, my husband actually spotted one in the wild. I wish I'd seen it, too!

Thank you, Vicky. I do okay with my characters (I've got thirty of them, now) and the plot threads in my series...what I have trouble with is real life!

Nancy, thank you! You make my day! Good luck.

Hi Paula: Hope you're feeling better, too! The concept of sharing went a bit too far this holiday, at least in our family. We all got "the bug!"

I'm going to be away for a few hours but will check back in a bit. Our son and his family head back to Hawaii tomorrow and Bompa and Dabba need a little quality time with the grandkids! I'll check back with you later.

Hello Kate, I was lucky enough to start at the beginning with Wolf Tales and now I'm up to 7 with the anthologies in between. The Chanku have become so real to me and old friends. I like the way you make each character real to the reader so that they can share in your vision. Thank you. All of the men are really HOT and the women know how to take care of business and keep those hotties in line even when they are howling. I hope your publisher allow you to continue entertaining us with your magic and I hope that you don't lose the vision of the Chanku. Keep on keeping on. Your fan always, Mospearet

You are one of the few authors that can write in the same universe and still keep it fresh. I am glad to know I will not have to give up my "addiction" any time soon. i can not wait to get my hands on this book. Thank you.

This sounds interesting and I am glad that a reader can "jump in" and not be lost. Although I might be inclined to start at the beginning as I love series!
It seems neat that You learn more about your characters as you write them! Best wishes for a great release and a good 2009.

Kate, congratulations on yet another book set in one of my favorite worlds, where females are strong and valued and wise and, best yet, in charge. I look forward to reading VII, and further stories to come in this series.

What a wonderful world to loose yourself in! Love your Wolf Tales series.

Can't wait to read about Mik and AJ's first meeting. They are two of my favorites in the series. I'm jealous of Tala!

Hi Kate, congratulations on your success with the Chanku series. I've been a fan since the first Wolf Tales and that amazing scene where Alexandria and Stefan meet.

You have a knack for blending action, suspense and romance -- all things I enjoy. I also like that your stories deal with darker issues -- like with Keisha being a rape survivor. You handle those very well, blending them into the story in a believable way.

All the best on continuing this series and bringing us more Chanku.

Thank you, Mo...what is so cool, for me, at least, is how many readers have started with the first book and stuck with me through the series. Talk about a wonderful compliment! Thank you so much.

lindseye, thank you. Each of my characters is a complete individual to me, and that helps keep the stories fresh, both for me and, hopefully, the readers as well. When they talk to me in my head, I always recognize their different voices!

MarthaE, I always suggest that readers start with the very first book, since I write the series like a soap opera with ongoing plots and characters who return in story after story, but most of the books also have enough backstory to bring a new reader up to speed.

kaisquared, so glad to hear you're enjoying my world! I hang out there so much myself it's like a second home!

Thanks, Leslie. When I asked my readers which stories they wanted in Wolf Tales IX, AJ and Mik won, hands down! They're definitely the most popular of all the characters, though I have to admit, my favorite is Anton. He's just so damned arrogant!

I know that you have talked about having to leave this series behind at some point, but for those of us caught up in the series will also be very sad to see it end.

Lynda, hopefully not for a long LONG time! I have a lot more stories yet to tell, and as long as enough of the books continue to sell, I imagine the publisher will keep asking for more.

Thank you, jbafaith--when I first started, I had no idea how it would develop, and I still don't! Of course, not knowing what's coming next keeps it a lot more exciting to write.
