Jasmine Haynes | Working Life really is like “The Office".

Thanks so much for having me as your guest. I’m excited to have Berkley releasing SHOW AND TELL this month, the second book in a trilogy that began with THE FORTUNE HUNTER, which won the Holt Medallion for erotic romance.

Here’s a little tidbit about SHOW AND TELL to whet your appetite. All her life Trinity Green has been a pleaser, first her mom and dad, then her husband. When she walks in on her husband with another woman, she realizes that trying to be the perfect wife with never a hair out of place or a smudge of makeup beneath her eyes was all for nothing. Now she's going to indulge herself, with good food, delicious wine, and hot sex. Then she meets the perfect man under the oddest of circumstances...

And Trinity also needs to get a job! That’s where my experiences working in an office atmosphere comes into play for the book. This spring I rented all the DVDs for “The Office.” You might think that show exaggerates what it’s really like, that no real boss is going to say or do stuff like that. But, swear it, they really do. I had a wonderful boss who drove me insane. I remember a time he walked up behind me and snapped my bra strap. I was in shock as he ran down to HR to ask if I could sue him. Another time he asked if I was sleeping with the VP of Manufacturing because the guy had given me such a glowing review. Of course, he didn’t just ask that in private, he yelled it out from his office door over to my cubicle. You might think I disliked this man, but for the most part he was actually a really nice guy. He just had this problem with saying and doing things before he thought them completely through. So, like “The Office” I had to bring along some characters that I worked with for SHOW AND TELL. Specifically, there’s lovely Inga Rice who gives Trinity hell on her new job. In my real life, she was a he. It was a nightmare from which I couldn’t seem to wake. But you know, I was kind of proud of the way I handled this guy in the end. Which is why I’m proud of the way Trinity handled Inga, too. So while much of what I write is totally fiction, a lot is also based on real events, maybe my events, or maybe a story someone else told me.

So, care to share any stories you have from your work? Any bizarre things happen to you recently? Any interesting characters that you’d like to share?

FAIR PLAY, the third book in THE FORTUNE HUNTER trilogy arrives sometime in April 2009. I also have an anthology coming out in December 2008, UNLACED, with stories by three other great writers, Jaci Burton, Joey Hill, and Denise Rossetti. In addition to Jasmine Haynes, many of you know me as Jennifer Skully, writing over-the-top (hopefully hilarious) romantic mysteries, and as JB Skully, I’ve created the Max Starr psychic mystery series. I had a boss during an internship who was a good supervisor and a decent guy but blatantly and obliviously sexist. And working for a woman who had a big-picture brain made my details-oriented focus very frustrating. But nothing, I don't think, to the level of what you describe! I look forward to reading the book!

You've had some interesting work experiences...and those usually bode well for a writer to use in her work! Hot cover and what sounds like a great read!

I really enjoyed Fortune Hunter and can't wait to read the second book. While it's been years since I've worked in an office I really enjoy the show Office.

My boss was very...unique, to say the least. I think he was the most outrageous I've ever experienced. And all this stuff does make for great writing ideas.

Thanks on the covers. I was really pleased with Show and Tell, it's a scene right out of the book! Oh my God, Unlaced, I love it!!

I'm so glad you've enjoyed the books, Kathy and Kristen.

Thanks for joining me on the blog! You're all wonderful.

Oh, Jasmine! What wild stories from your office-work days! I worked in 2 elementary school districts and primarily with women as colleagues. But there were some men: one principal who was a wonderful and supportive guy, but there was another who reminded me of Wickham in Austen's P&P. Thankfully, the school board got rid of him after a year...

Enjoyed your post!

Ooh, Wickham. That's very descriptive, Marilyn. Those kind can seem so genuine, which makes them all that much harder to detect. At least my boss was right out there! And really, he never did anything that was icky, just insensitive. I'm glad you enjoyed the post.

I enjoy the strength of your heroines in the workplace. They screw up, then fix it and move forward. I love them all.

Thank you for all the excellent books that you've given us to enjoy!

Thank you, Rita. I'm so glad that you find my girls realistic, especially in the workplace. Because, um, I've made a lot of those mistakes myself! It's horrifying! But it does give me stories to tell.

I once had a boss who was really bad too, although I strangely liked him as well. He was about 5 feet tall and was from Texas - we're talking cowboy boots and big belt buckle - the works. He was one of those kind of sticklers for detail that had other women in the department crying on a regular basis. I hate to admit this, but I just got to the point I lied to him when he asked about details that didn't matter. Right before I left the company to go back to grad school, he asked me what color the car was that hit our insured (this was an insurance adjuster job) and I said without hesitation, "red." He looked at me all squinty-eyed and said, "they're always red." I nodded and replied, "there are lots of red cars on the road these days." And that was that. It's not like he was going to actually do the work to find out. I called his bluff and oddly he respected me for it. So weird, huh?

I love it, Leigh. You lie so sincerely. And really, it's just a little white lie (or a red one, as the case may be).

Thanks for visiting!

Bosses can be freakishly weird *g*. Having traveled as much as I have (my hubby recently retired from the Air Force), I typically got a new one every year. Strangely enough, the guy that gave me gray hairs (seriously, I'm not kidding) was one of the ones I loved the most. And at his going away party, he thanked me for being his "work wife". I found it quite amusing...my hubby not so much! LOL.

You don't have gray hairs, Keira!!! No way!
