Sara Reyes | What Ever Happened to...?

Sara ReyesWhen you've read in a genre for over five years you'll find that some of your favorite authors seem to stop writing or no longer publish books. And it makes one wonder, whatever happened to...? This month I've stumbled across that phenomena when I was entering the books for the Montana Mavericks series being re-issued by Silhouette. This was one of the last continuity series I ever collected, sorry, continuity series are not my favorite thing and as I can read out of order, collecting before reading misses the appeal with me. But for some reason, I'll blame the first Fortune family, in 1994 I collected a year's worth of the "Mavericks." But when I looked at the ones in the series I realized that nearly half of the authors are no longer publishing. And I wonder, what happened. Did they retire? Did they die? Did their books go out of style? Seriously, what happened?

Am I getting to be an "old" reader? This could be a serious problem. I always assumed reading kept me going, learning new things, going new places, learning a new lingo (which is probably a very dated term, ah well). So, let's examine the Montana Mavericks authors:

Chapter One

Ealing 1825

Oliver stared out the window of the library at Halstead Hall. The dreary winter day further depressed his spirits as he fought to shove his painful memories back into the stout strongbox in which he kept them. It was so much harder here than in town, where he could lose himself in wenches and wine.

Not that he could lose himself for long. Though the scandal was nineteen years old, there were still whispers of it wherever he went.

Gran had told the guests that night that Mother had gone to the hunting lodge to be alone and had fallen asleep. Awakened by sounds of what she thought was an intruder, she'd panicked and shot him, only to discover that the man was her husband. Then, in her shock and grief, Mother had turned the Read More...

Rosemary Harris | The Woman In Red

ROSEMARY HARRISDEAD HEADI’m going to my first RT Booklover’s Convention this April and no sooner did I click Send on the registration form than I went out and bought a red dress. Unless you know me, this might not seem like a significant event but ninety-five percent of the items in my closet are black. There’s a blue suit and a brown dress and a lilac one-shouldered number that I had to buy because it’s Armani and was on sale, and it looked terrific on me eight years ago when I bought it but it’s never been worn outside of my closet. (Did I mention it has sequins?) I don’t know what possessed me.

I’d gone to Macy’s to buy a bra - forget Victoria’s Secret - Macy’s has the best selection on the planet. Anyway, bras are on the sixth floor and some marketing genius must have realized that by having only escalators (and no elevators) in the building a shopper would have to pass lots of other merchandise they aren’t really looking for on the way to the thing they are looking for. There it was, on the fourth floor. Red. Sleeveless. On sale. And calling to me. It’s one of those dresses that seems to have a shape even before you slip it on. Does everyone weigh an extra pound or two in January? I was risking a depressing sight in the harsh light of the dressing room, but I had to see what it looked like.

Prologue

October 1101
Constantinople

The damned incense hung eternal, like death, cleaved only by the baneful dirge of screams and curses. Each clang and ring of metal—tool on tool, tools falling into bowls and against remnants of armor and ruined weaponry—was piercing. Sonorous Latin droned from the colorless lips of the robed men who mindlessly haloed the long, plastered room as if puppeted by the enormous crucifix hung at the far end. Bodies thrashed on pallets, fighting to free themselves from the hands of the surgeons who sweated and strained and worked like the dogs their patients swore them to be.

Surely this could be no faithful hospital.

For Roderick, it was Hell’s antechamber.

Sobs roiled within the fiery incense as well, as if attempting to dampen the cloying stench of rot Read More...

Chapter One

Crete, March 1848

Caroline Huntington was falling.

The distance from saddle to ground took on a dreadful expanse as her horse reared. Flung backward, heartbeat doubling in her throat, she clutched at the pommel, but the smooth leather slipped beneath her palms. For a sickening moment she hurtled down through empty air. Then the earth rushed to meet her, clouting her head and sending a rough pain jolting down her outstretched arm. She swallowed, sudden darkness hovering at the edges of her vision. From far away she heard the throb of hoofbeats receding.

“Help . . .”

It came out a moan, and who would hear? She had left the village far behind, drawn too far up the track by the promise of a dazzling view from the hillside, the scent of dusty herbs in the clear air.

Mary Vine | Writing Tips

MARY VINEMAYA'S GOLDFirst of all, believe you can write. Don’t let anyone’s opinion convince you otherwise. Poor contest scores or bad critiques can make you think about ending your writing career before it even gets started. My worst critique was done by a woman who said I had so many errors that she didn’t have the time or energy to critique more than a chapter, let alone a complete manuscript. Thankfully, I thought this was a rather outlandish thing to say to someone, sloughed it off and kept trying. It is a well-known fact that if you continue to write you get better. My writing improved and my manuscript went on to sell. Not everyone is going to like your writing, it is really all subjective; people don’t all like the same type of story.

What should I write about? Don’t worry about writing the type of story that is selling right now as something else may be in vogue when you finish. Instead, write the kind of book you love to read and add what you know or are interested in learning. Further, stretch your horizons. I thought I could only write fiction, but then found I could also write an article on something I knew about, and sold to a magazine, twice, before I sold a book.

Kat Martin Reese's Bride
by Kat Martin

Wounded in battle, Marjor Reese Dewar returns to England -- but his damaged leg is nothing compared to his shattered heart...

Years before, love-struck Reese departed his home at Briarwood with a promise from raven-haired Elizabeth Clemmens: that she would make a life with him upon his return. But mere months later, she married the Earl of Alderidge, attaining wealth and status Reese could never match. Memories of that betrayal make his homecoming far more bitter than sweet.

Elizabeth knows when she appears on Reese's doorstep dressed in widow's garb that she is twisting the knife. But fear for her young son's safety has overcome guilt and shame: she begs Reese for protection against the forces that would see the boy Earl dead to posses his fortune. The former overs forge an uneasy alliance, but Elizabeth still harbors some deep secrets -- and Reese know that protecting her mean placing himself in danger... of losing his heart all over again.

Eloquently depicts the ramifications bad decisions can have on everyone involved.

Excerpt

The crisp black taffeta skirt of her mourning gown rustled as the woman walked out of the dress shop a few doors in front of him.

Reese Dewar froze where he stood, the silver-headed cane in his hand forgotten, along with the ache in his leg.  Rage took its place, dense and heavy, hot and seething.

Sooner or later, he had known he would see her.  He had told himself it wouldn’t matter, that seeing her again wouldn’t affect him.  She meant nothing to him, not anymore, not for nearly eight years.

But as she stepped off the wooden walkway, a ray of autumn sunlight gleamed against the jet black curls on her shoulders and anger boiled up inside him, fury unlike he had known in years.

Diane A. S. Stuckart | How To Recycle An Old Plot Idea

DIANE A.S. STUCKARTA BOLT FROM THE BLUEOne of the items under the tree for me this Christmas was a bottle cutting kit. If you're old enough, you might remember this gadget spawned of the early 1970s ecology movement (yep, the same one which eventually morphed into the current "green" trend). The idea was to keep those pesky no-deposit, no-return bottles from cluttering up the landfills. All it took was a spin with a special cutting wheel, followed by quick applications of heat and cold, and then, voila, your useless empty bottle was now a handy drinking glass, or a coaster, or a mini-terrarium.

Being a crafty sort, I'd always wanted to give bottle cutting a try. I had visions of creating cool-looking stuff out of all our empty wine bottles and then distributing my eco-friendly designs as presents. And so I was quite pleased when Santa filled this particular item on my list. I now have my kit and a whole box of empty wine bottles to play with (no, we don't drink THAT much; my husband had the foresight to start collecting the empties well in advance of December). Guess what all y'all are getting for Christmas this coming year!

Society gossip has kept Lady Juliet Boyd out of the public eye since the suspicious death of her husband. Although she's been persuaded to accept an invitation to a summer house party, all she really wants is a quiet life, free from the attentions of any man.

But there she meets the scandalous Sebastian St. Claire, who makes her feel things, want things, need things she's never experienced before. Starved of affection, Juliet finds his lovemaking irresistible. But does he really want her—or just the truth behind her disgrace?

'It was eleven o'clock, Gray,' Sebastian pointed out as he expertly handled the matching greys stepping out lively in front of his curricle.

'As far as I am concerned, any hour before midday is the crack of dawn,' Lord Gideon Grayson—Gray to his closest friends—assured him dourly as he huddled down on the seat beside him, the high collar of his fashionably cut jacket snug about his ears despite the warmth of this August summer day. 'I barely had time to wake, let alone enjoy my breakfast.'

Daily Dose | New Authors, New Worlds, New Words, Good Times

The Daily Dose
Smattering of Romance, Paranormal, and General Observations

Catherine Spangler gave a presentation at the North Texas RWA chapter meeting this past weekend. I’d seen her book covers, but I’d never actually picked up one of her novels. When I heard she was presenting, I read up on her books. Her TOUCHED BY DARKNESS, TOUCHED BY FIRE and TOUCHED BY LIGHT intrigued me. Fortunately, a friend had all three and loaned them to me.

Catherine SpanglerTypically, I don’t read anything while in the midst of writing, but I made an exception to scan the first couple of chapters. I really liked what I had to read. Her writing is intense and fresh with characters that leap off the page. I am already wondering what happened to the characters in the book, so they are sitting on my shelf as a reward for meeting my personal page count. Something of a carrot and a stick:

New Authors, New Worlds, New Words

Good times are to be had in any new discovery -- so check out this fabulous trio of books that has me so intrigued.

TOUCHED BY DARKNESSTOUCHED BY DARKNESS
Dr. Kara Cantrell settled in the sleepy town of Zorro, Texas, convinced she and her child had escaped the sinister reach of a supernatural underworld. But now dark forces may jeopardize her new life. Her only hope is Damien Morgan, a dangerous, alluring man with superhuman abilities. He and Kara share a mystical link that triggers desires they must ignore. But as they work together to protect her son, and begin tracking the evil stalking them, something threatens to push them toward the edge...of darkness.

TOUCHED BY FIRE
Since a brutal attack on her sister eleven years ago, Marla Reynolds has been emotionally frozen. But the passion of one man-a member of an ancient superhuman race-could melt her defenses.

TOUCHED BY LIGHT
Dr. Julia Reynolds lives a solitary existence. But Adam Masters is determined to draw her into a dark and dangerous otherworld-and make her give in to the stunning sexual attraction between them.

Read the excerpt that hooked me: Exercpt. Frankly, that last line sold me beyond anything else. This is so my kind of book!

Discovering New Authors

I can’t possibly read every book in the world – I used to want to try, but now I am satisfied with the fact that no matter my tastes or desires, books and authors are out there waiting to fulfill my entertainment needs. Catherine Spangler is hardly a new author on the block, but she’s definitely a new one on my book shelf and that makes her fresh and new to me.

When you discover an author, you do more than just discover the book they’ve published. You’ve discovered their backlist and their future titles as well. It’s an all access pass to entertainment and marvelous things.

Amusingly enough, when I went by my mother’s this morning to drop off my daughter I saw the book she was reading. Would you believe it: TOUCHED BY DARKNESS by Catherine Spangler? I cracked up and told her I was reading the same book. What my mother didn’t realize is that there were two more set in that world. Now she and my daughter will be trekking to a bookstore today. Apparently she’s read TOUCHED BY DARKNESS three times and is currently on her fourth pass through the book.

What new authors and series have you become enchanted by recently?

A lifelong writer turned author, Heather Long's first book REMEMBERING ASHBY is available for purchase at Sapphire Blue Publishing. Coming soon is the urban fantasy: PRIME EVIL. The Daily Dose explores books, television, writing and more -- all topics that Heather enjoys.

Carolyn Brown | Why Writing A Series Has Both Ups And Downs

CAROLYN BROWNHello and thanks for having me on your site to celebrate Getting Lucky hitting the market this month. It’s the final installment in the Lucky Series and tells Julie and Griffin’s story about their journey to true love and happiness. Writing a series has ups and downs, pros and cons, as opposed to writing a single book.

One pro to writing a series is research. Basically, the whole series is going to be about the same area and time frame so when the research is done for the first book, it’s pretty well set for the next two.

I wrote about the two areas I was most familiar with and even though each book was set in a different town in southern Oklahoma or north central Texas, they were all within spittin’ distance of each other. Close enough that the Luckadeau cousins could visit back and forth for barn dances, cattle sales and family gatherings.

Chapter 1

Oxfordshire, 1487

She was brazen, for a murderer.

From horseback on a nearby hill, Sir Robert Hilliard looked down upon Drayton Hall, where nursemaid Sarah Audley walked hand-in-hand with her charge, five-year-old Francis Drayton, whom she’d made a viscount by killing his father.

No one suspected the truth but the League of the Blade, the secret society born long ago in a time of darkness to bring justice to innocent victims. Robert was a member, although not by the usual methods.

Viscount Drayton, the murder victim, had once been a Bladesman, too, Robert’s mentor, and had risen to the Council of Elders. Such a man’s death would always be scrutinized. Shanna's Road Journal | More Than You Thought...Your Library

Shanna's Road Journal
Shanna Swendson's Observations ... On Line and On the Road

As much time as I spend at my local library (since it's two blocks from my house -- more convenient than any bookstore -- I'm there a lot), I hadn't thought about library resources online, but I'm finding that online library information goes way beyond the electronic catalog.

For instance, I've discovered the information for book lovers at the American Library Association's "I love libraries" site, found at http://www.ilovelibraries.org/.

You can find Booklist reviews, lists of notable books, lists of award winners and lists of recommended books. Don't even click on the "recommended reading" link unless you've got plenty of time to kill. There are lists of books for various age groups and topics, such as popular paperbacks that teens will enjoy, books for lifelong learners, books about various cultural groups, and recommended books from certain genres. There's even a good list of "read alikes" -- other books you might like if you like certain bestselling titles.

If you know a student who needs to find something to read for a book report, this is a good place to start. These aren't stuffy "books that are good for you" lists, either. There are good lists of books for encouraging reluctant readers to read for pleasure, with purely "fun" books organized under popular topics.

If you've thought about starting a book club, there's a guide for that on the same site, with some recommended books about reading groups, some questions to consider when starting a group, some suggested ground rules, tips on picking books and a guide to discussing books in a group.

It's also worth seeing what online resources your local library has. Mine has electronic newsletters about books and library events, e-books you can "check out" for your computer or e-reader, and real-time chat with reference librarians.

Next month, the convention and conference season will be kicking into gear, so I'll be back on the road and actually leaving the house again.

Shanna Swendson writes "Fairy Tales for Modern Times" and is the author of the Enchanted, Inc. series about a Texan in New York City, a magical NYC. Visit her website or blog for more information.

Jen's Jewels | Interview with Gretchen Rubin

Gretchen RubinTHE HAPPINESS PROJECTHappiness is an ambiguous term. How can we truly define what this word means without taking into account all of the various components in our lives? For example, if we are healthy, debt-free, and generally like our jobs, does this mean we have achieved supreme happiness? I don’t know. I would think so, but then again, maybe we are missing the essential core that leads to sheer contentment.

This month’s Jen’s Jewels Gretchen Rubin takes this question to task in her latest release called, but of course …THE HAPPINESS PROJECT. Over a year’s time, she implemented her unique plan to track her own level of happiness by using innovative strategies and simple gauges to determine if she was living what Oprah would call "her best life." Without a doubt, if you are looking for ways to enrich your life, this book is for you!

As part of this interview, Harper Collins Publishers has donated five copies for you, my lucky readers, to win. So, don’t forget to look for the trivia question at the end. As you continue on your journey towards health and happiness in 2010, I thank you for making Jen’s Jewels a part of your reading adventure.

Jen: The path to publication is oftentimes as fascinating as the project itself. So that my readers may have a better understanding of the woman behind the words, please tell us a little bit about your educational and professional background.

Gretchen: I went to Yale undergrad and then attended Yale Law School, but it was when I was clerking for Sandra Day O’Connor that I realized I wanted to be a writer.

Jen: Being editor-in-chief of the Yale Law Journal whet your appetite for a possible career in publishing. While serving in this position, what was the most challenging task that came across your desk? And, what steps did you take in order to be successful?

Gretchen: The biggest challenge in working for the Yale Law Journal was managing a large group of very independent people, and in order to be successful I worked as hard as I could!

Jen: In 1995 as a recent law school graduate, you had the amazing opportunity to clerk for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Please describe for us the selection process. And, what was the toughest hurdle you had to clear in order to obtain this position?

Gretchen: The selection process was extensive. You submit transcripts and recommendations, and if you make it through the first cut, you get an interview. The interview was the hardest part – the toughest hurdle to clear – for that position.

Jen: After leaving that position, you served as chief adviser to the Federal Communications Commission. Also, you lectured at both the Yale Law School and the Yale School of Management. How did these experiences positively contribute to your decision to actively pursue a career in publishing?

Gretchen: They showed me that as much fun as I was having in these other jobs in law, I really wanted to be a writer.

Jen: Tacking onto my last question, describe for us your "Ah! Ha!" moment which ultimately changed your life.

Gretchen: Walking around the Capitol grounds during lunch hour while I was clerking, I suddenly realized that I wanted to be a writer. At that time, I was writing a book in my free time, and I realized I could make writing a career instead of treating it as a hobby. The book I was working at that time eventually was published as my book, Power Fame Money Sex: A User’s Guide.

Jen: In terms of your publishing career, you have written bestselling books on Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy. What were the most fascinating tidbits of information you discovered while researching these two great historical figures?

Gretchen: I couldn’t possibly narrow it down to just a few items! I picked these two figures because they’re overwhelmingly fascinating and surprising. There are hundreds of fascinating tidbits!

Jen: Your latest endeavor is quite appropriate for this time of year of resolutions and new beginnings. Please describe for us the catalyst that propelled you to embark on THE HAPPINESS PROJECT.

Gretchen: I had an epiphany on a rainy afternoon, on a crowded city bus. "The days are long, but the years are short," I realized. "Time is passing, and I’m not focusing enough on the things that really matter." In that moment, I decided to dedicate a year to my happiness project.

Jen: You start off the project by listing your twelve commandments. How did you go about choosing them? And, what relevance do they have to the implementation of the project?

Gretchen: I arrived at them after a lot of research and thinking. They were the guiding principles that pervaded my happiness project beyond the individual resolutions that I tried to follow.

Jen: The project took place over a year. Please describe it for us.

Gretchen: Quite simply, I set a theme for each month, with a set of specific resolutions to carry out.

Jen: I had to chuckle when I read about your frustration with keeping a gratitude journal. My experience mirrored yours. I gave up, too! What are some realistic expectations that one can achieve by pursuing this endeavor?

Gretchen: Boosting gratitude for your ordinary life will make you happier. If a gratitude journal doesn’t work for you, find other ways. Every time I sit down at the computer, I take a moment to appreciate my ordinary life.

Jen: As a reviewer, I was impressed with your willingness to confront criticism when you received a not-so-flattering review and then turned it into a teachable moment to make yourself better. How is a person’s willingness to confront adversity a stepping stone towards reaching happiness?

Gretchen: You’re right. It’s not much fun but it’s important to do. Facing up to the challenges that life offers is an important part of striving toward happiness

Jen: What was your greatest self-discovery from completing this project?

Gretchen: One of my most important realizations was that I can only build a happy life on the foundation of my own nature. For that reason, my resolution to "Be Gretchen" is the most important one I identified.

Jen: Let’s switch gears and talk about your superb website. Please share with us the resources you have available that enable anyone to start a happiness project.

Gretchen: My website has a guide of sorts to start your own happiness project.

I’ve also started a "Happiness Project Toolbox" where you can launch your own Happiness Project.

Jen: Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to stop by and chat with my readers. I look forward to seeing you on the road to happiness in 2010.

Gretchen: Thanks!

Now that you have read about Gretchen, I hope you are inspired to begin your own happiness project for 2010. I encourage you to stop by your favorite bookstore or local library branch and pick up a copy of THE HAPPINESS PROJECT today!

Better yet, how would you like to win your very own copy? Enter our contest and you could be one of five winners.

SANDI SHILHANEK | TECHNOLOGY MY NEW BEST FREIND

Sandi Shilhanek

Last Sunday my husband and I went shopping. He has decided that we need to attend a dinner for long term employees of the company he works for and therefore I needed a cocktail dress. I was really not looking forward to buying a fancy dress, and especially not with him as my co-shopper. I suppose he knew this as he bribed me first with a new piece of technology.

I know am the proud possessor of a new MP3 player that holds a micro sd card that has preloaded music. The card is called slot radio, and while you can’t arrange the songs there are different cards you can buy, and the cards have several different playlists to choose from, and my card has 1000 songs.
