Sara Edmonds | The World of E-readers: Sony Readers

red Sony readerIf you read my previous post, you saw that I examined the qualities of Barnes & Nobles nook that you might prefer over the Kindle or Sony e-readers. This time, I take a look at the Sony e-reader's best qualities.

Like Barnes & Noble's nook, Sony also has a touch screen but they take it a bit further. You can also turn the pages with a touch of your finger, a move to give you still a better feel for reading an actual book. Again, this takes away that extra space of the Kindle's keyboard, by putting its menu and keyboard in a touch menu. Sony does not however, have their menu in color or give you the chance to look at book covers in color.

You can also highlight passages in your book and take notes, either with stylus pen or keyboard. The note feature is also included in the Kindle, but with Kindle you have to use the keyboard.

The Sony Reader also supports other formats on its reader, so you can read other PDFs and Word Docs.

Sony ReaderThe biggest drawback to the standard Sony Reader- it is not wireless. But before you take this option off the market completely, Sony has (like Kindle) a bigger Daily Edition that is wireless and includes a bigger 7inch touch screen. You do pay for this improvement however, with a price of $399- a price that is still cheaper than the new improved Kindle2. The standard reader is $299. And if that is still not in your budget, Sony makes a pocket version of the reader at $199. You only give up an inch of screen display from the standard version.

The one great feature the Sony has the no one else does--the ability to check out books from the library and read them on your Sony e-reader. You can not however, share books with friends.

Sony's e-reader is the featured partnership of Borders, so like Barnes & Noble's nook you still have a chance to have the book from your favorite bookstore at your finger tips. Sony does not compete against Barnes & Noble and Kindle by having every bestseller priced at $9.99, but a lot of them are. Shopping for e-books on Borders.com is no easy task. Amazon and Barnesandnoble.com make this process much easier. New e-reader additions and upgrades will have to also come from Sony and not Borders, which could be a draw-back as Barnes & Noble and Amazon can make new versions of their e-readers based on customer feedback quickly.

These are the best features of Sony's e-reader. Next time I take a look at the Kindle. In the meantime, if you have a Sony e-reader, let me know what you love (or dislike) about your e-reader.

Daily Dose | Do His Enemies define a Hero?

The Daily Dose
Smattering of Romance, Paranormal, and General Observations

Watching the last hurrah for David Tennant's Doctor last night in the two parts The End of the Time. The film epic detailed the complex relationship between the Doctor and the Master. They need each other --- direct and opposing forces. The Batman had the Joker and many more in his gallery of villains.

Novel Heroes

In Julie Garwood's Heartbreaker, Nick Buchanan is an FBI agent who specializes in missing children, murder and more. His villain is a serial who targets Nick's oldest friend Father Tom and Father Tom's sister. Nick doesn't realize at first that the villain going after them is someone with an axe to grind with him.

For Eve Dallas in J.D. Robb's In Death series, her villain is the father who raped and abused her as a child. She gives him the finger every day she has a moment of happiness and since she met Roarke, she has a lot more of those. Surprisingly, I don't think of the criminals she puts away as the villains for Eve because they are the job, they are the villains in other lives that she stands up for – her father and whoever her mother are the ultimate villains. Little by little, she is overcoming them.

Do You Need a Big Bad?

Does every hero need a "big bad"? I use this term because each season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer would focus on one big bad who would be the ongoing storyline for each season. In the first season, it was the Master, in the second, it was Angelus, in the third, it was the Mayor and in the fourth, it turned out to be Adam while in the fifth it was Glory. Willow took on the role of the big bad in the sixth and the First Evil earned the coveted spot for the seventh and final season.

Barbara Allan Antiques Flee Market by Barbara Allan

Brandy Borne's new life in the small Mississippi River town of Serenity is anything but serene. Moving back in with her bipolar Mum, Vivian - an antique herself who treats Brandy like a perpetual five-year old - is challenging enough, but stocking and running their antiques holiday booth at the shopping mall is positively daunting.

And as the big Christmas season gets into full swing, they find themselves in the midst of small-town mayhem when an old flame of Vivan's turns up mysteriously deceased.

'Tis the season - to be murdered?

Brandy and her diva Mum last saw the recently departed dealer, Walter Yeager, at a flea market where Vivian made her usual theatrical scene while saving Walter from under-pricing a valuable first edition of Tarzan and the Apes. The prospective first buyer was furious, and when Walter ends up dead the next day - 'officially' of a heart attack - and the book goes missing, Vivian senses a Yuletide homicide.

As the season's first flakes of snow drift lazily down over Serenity, Brandy and her mother - with moral support from Sushi, the decidedly spoiled Shih Tzu - must unearth vintage clues that point to restless ghosts from the town's past. If there's any duo that can tell a fake from a real thing, it's Brandy and her scene-stealing mother. But even though they know who's been naughty and who's been nice, they'll have to be very careful not to disturb too many ghosts from Christmas past...

Chapter One

The snow had begun falling in the late afternoon—big, wet flakes that stuck to the rooftops of houses like dollops of marshmallow cream, and coated bare branches with hardened white chocolate, and covered the ground in fluffy cotton candy. (I’ve been off sugar for a while and it’s just killing me.)

I was sitting in the living room on a needlepoint Queen Anne armchair, gazing out the front picture window at the wintry wonderland, waiting for Mother to come downstairs. Sushi, my brown and white shih tzu, lounged on my lap, facing the window, too—but she couldn’t see anything because the diabetes had taken away her vision.

Soosh, however, seemed content, and any impartial observer who hadn’t caught sight of the doggie’s milky-white orbs would swear she was taking it Read More...

Sharon Lathan | Birthin' Babies

MY DEAREST MR. DARY"I don’t know nothin’ ‘bout birthin’ no babies, Miss Scarlett!"

I love that classic line delivered by a frantic Prissy (Butterfly McQueen) in the movie Gone With the Wind. Makes me laugh every time and is a humorous
quote uttered quite frequently where I work. In our case it is a complete joke since my "real" job is as an RN in the Maternal Child Health field. Specifically I am a 25-year veteran of Neonatal ICU nursing, so I can claim with all sincerity to be an expert in both laboring and delivering mothers and babies.

My professional experience coupled with being a mother of two aided me tremendously in writing of Elizabeth Darcy’s pregnancy and delivery as well as those early weeks with a newborn. Ah, the memories! Lizzy’s pregnancy did not proceed exactly like either of mine did, nor was her delivery precisely the same, but lets just say there were definite similarities! And after witnessing and assisting in literally thousands of deliveries over the years, it was very easy to write a realistic scenario.

After the flurry of the holidays, I had expected January to be a nice, quiet, slow month for books – boy, was I wrong! I have a plethora of brand new cozy mysteries to share with you this month, and each one sounds just as fun and fascinating as the next. And what a perfect month to just stay inside and read!

Where I live in North Texas, we are experiencing the coldest, strangest winter I can personally remember. We Texans aren’t used to this!

But I’m not too worried about it – got a load of firewood and a batch of delightful cozy mysteries to keep me busy and warm! I hope you can find something among these titles that will peak your interest as well!

Berkley Prime Crime; $6.99

My beloved cousin Lisa is a cat fanatic, and lives in San Francisco where she helps care for hundreds of homeless kitties. So imagine my delight in finding Rebecca M. Hale’s book, HOW TO WASH A CAT: A Cats and Curios Mystery, a cozy mystery featuring cats and San Francisco - my cousin will love this book!

An investigation that starts amid the curios and novelties of a San Francisco antiques shop follows a twisted trail of dangerous deception that leads all the way back to the days of the Gold Rush itself.

HOW TO WASH A CAT is unusual in that the main character of the story is the author herself, but this is a fast-paced, interesting mystery that captures the reader’s imagination. Rebecca M. Hale worked as a patent attorney in the San Francisco Bay Area for several years before taking time off to write her first novel. Now thoroughly addicted to the writing process, Rebecca and her two cats, Rupert and Isabella, have moved their writing quarters to Western Colorado. MURDER HAS NO CLASS: A Bellehaven House Mystery

Mystery lovers can take a trip back in time with Rebecca Kent’s latest addition to her Bellehaven House series, MURDER HAS NO CLASS. Set in Edwardian England, this lively novel will satisfy history fans as well as mystery enthusiasts.

In MURDER HAS NO CLASS, Meredith is confronted by a very angry ghost, who insists he was hanged for a crime he didn't commit. With the help of her reluctant companions, Meredith must prove his innocence and bring the true murderer to justice.

EGGSECUTIVE ORDERS: A White House Chef Mystery

Now the Secret Service is picking apart the kitchen-and scrutinizing the staff's every move. This is a cute little mystery that is timely, considering all the publicity lately regarding the new White House Chef and her recent appearance on the Food Network's Iron Chef series. WHO KILLED THE PINUP QUEEN: A Where Are They Now? Mystery
By Toni L.P. Kelner
Berkley Prime Crime; $6.99

I’ve been a freelance entertainment reporter for nearly fourteen years, so when I received Toni L.P. Kelner’s WHO KILLED THE PINUP QUEEN: A Where Are They Now? Mystery, that features freelance reporter Tilda Harper, I couldn’t pass it up!

Known for her Where Are They Now? articles, Tilda Harper is working on two articles simultaneously-one about Sandra Schrest, a former pinup model, and one about Tucker and Hoyt Ambrose, stars of Cowtown, an old Western show. But when she discovers the pinup queen brutally murdered, she finds that the two stories may have some disturbing connections.

I loved Kelner’s feisty Tilda, and the funny cowboy sayings she sprinkled throughout the chapters. It was also interesting to note that the character of Sandra Schrest was created for an actual person who donated money to charity to have a character named for her. Very cool.

A BOLT FROM THE BLUE

A BOLT FROM THE BLUE: A Leonardo da Vinci Mystery
By Diane A.S. Stuckart
Berkley Prime Crime; $14

A different hero for cozy mysteries, A BOLT FROM THE BLUE, by Diane A.S. Stuckart, features legendary artist Leonardo Da Vinci as the main character and mystery solver.

As court engineer to the Duke of Milan, da Vinci turns his superior mind to many pursuits- from outlandish contraptions to solving the odd murder. With war looming ever closer, the iron-fisted Duke of Milan calls upon Master da Vinci to invent the deadliest weapon ever-a flying machine. So da Vinci calls in a craftsman who happens to be father to his star apprentice, Dino.

But da Vinci does not know that Dino is actually the craftsman's daughter, Delfina, who keeps her gender a secret to serve as apprentice. But as Delfina worries that her father will prove her undoing, someone murders another apprentice. Now, as her master works his brilliance, Delfina can only pray that no other apprentice, including herself, will fall victim.

This is the third book in Stuckart's Da Vinci series, and I for one, will be seeking out the first two to catch up on the fun and the thrills.

And last, but certainly not least, a lovely British cozy mystery fro author Ann Purser.

TRAGEDY AT TWO
buy TRAGEDY AT TWO at amazon
TRAGEDY AT TWO: A Lois Meade Mystery
By Ann Purser
Berkley Prime Crime; $23.95

In TRAGEDY AT TWO, working mom/cleaner/amateur sleuth Lois Meade is having family woes. Her daughter Josie was admittedly considering leaving her partner, Rob, but she never expected him to be found badly beaten and left for dead in a ditch by the side of the road. When Rob tragically dies from his injuries without regaining consciousness, Inspector Hunter Cowgill has a murder investigation on his hands, and once again he engages the assistance of the woman he respects above all others - Lois.

Suspicion quickly falls on the traveling gypsies who are camped out on Alf Smith's property. There is strong prejudice among many in the village who consider the gypsies no better than tramps and thieves. Lois must follow a twisted path that leads to arson, local delinquents, secret assignations, and blackmail-before she can discover who's been tinkering with the truth.

TRAGEDY AT TWO is the ninth book in the Lois Meade Mysteries, which started with the days of the week (MURDER ON MONDAY, TERROR ON TUESDAY, etc.) and now continues with numbers (WARNING AT ONE, TRAGEDY AT TWO.) Very clever.

So there you go! That should keep you cozy enthusiasts occupied, at least for a few wintry days! Come back by on the 15th for a special mystery author interview! Until then, cozy reading, ya’ll!

Daily Dose | World Building for a Paranormal Romance

The Daily Dose
Smattering of Romance, Paranormal, and General Observations
DEAD TOWN
Have you ever wondered about the process of world building for a paranormal romance? Most paranormal romances are set in the contemporary world that looks an awful lot like our own with a few exceptions. The twist in most paranormal romances is the presence of the paranormal. That requires a certain amount of world building.

Understanding the Rules

Readers and writers have one thing in common where new worlds are concerned. They need to understand the rules of that world. In TWILIGHT, for example, vampires are created when one vampire bites a human and injects venom. If the human survives the venom's effects, they become a vampire. If not, they die. No matter whether they transform or die, the process is excruciating and takes about 48 to 72 hours. This is important information for the audience because it's a different take on the creation of the vampire.

In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the blood swap between vampire and victim is necessary and the victim must die. Then you wait to see if they rise again. Apparently, it doesn't always happen. However, when the victim rises as a vampire, they are not that person as a vampire, instead the soul is gone and a demon moves in. Again, this is important information for the audience to know because it establishes the rules for that world.

Supernatural Out in the Open

Nancy HolznerIn both of those examples, the supernatural elements are "secret" from the world at large. When you bring the supernatural out into the world, you open up a completely new can of worms. For Nancy Holzner's DEADTOWN this means cordoning off part of Boston as the "deadtown" and giving Massachusetts the "Monster"chusetts nickname as well as making those supernatural creatures fight for their rights.

Fresh Teen Takes | Start out the new year...

Fresh Takes from the Teen Shelves
All the news, updates and gossip for the Young Adult -- books, authors, movies and more!

Happy New Year!  Lot’s of great books coming out this year, and some of the nicest people I know are kicking things off in January. I’ve been looking forward to some of these books for awhile, so it’s great to get to tell you about them.

Undead MuchLeading things off is Stacey Jay’s UNDEAD MUCH?, the follow up to the awesomely titled YOU ARE SO UNDEAD TO ME.

Stacey Jay:  It's winter break in Carol, Arkansas and Zombie Settler, Megan Berry, finally has everything she ever wanted--a place on the pom squad, peace among the undead, and the boyfriend of her dreams. But life in Zombie-ville never stay drama-free for long.

Soon a cheerleader uprising threatens to ruin half time forever, an undead psychic hottie makes Megan question her commitment to Ethan, and super strong zombies that are immune to Settler magic land Megan and her Settler friends in a huge mess of trouble. Even worse, Megan herself is the prime evil-zombie-raising suspect and on the verge of being thrown in jail for working forbidden magic.

Now Megan and her best fr-enemy, Monica, must work together to quell the zombie uprising and prove Megan's innocence, all while reclaiming half-time from conniving cheerleaders and sorting through some nasty family secrets.

RCM: I thought YOU ARE SO UNDEAD TO ME was so much fun, but do we need to read it first to enjoy UNDEAD MUCH?

Stacey JayStacey Jay: Absolutely not. There is continuity in the story line, but UNDEAD MUCH? can be read alone. (That said, there are BIG spoilers for You Are So Undead to Me in UNDEAD MUCH? and even in the blurb Razorbill chose for the back cover copy. So if you haven't read Book One and don't like knowing who the bad guy is ahead of time, beware!)

RCM: Tell me a fun fact about writing UNDEAD MUCH?.

Stacey Jay: I was pregnant when I was writing this book and constantly starving. It really showed in the first draft. I had half a dozen scenes of people eating...usually pizza or chicken nuggets, my two favorite preggers foods. Needless to say, I had to go back and revise. Food is fun, but I know my readers enjoy more focus on the zombies and romance. Still, I left in a few pizza references, including a big zombie-smackdown in a pizza kitchen!

RCM: Well, I’m sold. My first job was making pizza at Chuck E. Cheese. I can confirm the place is full of zombies.  Looks like I’ll be taking a walk down memory lane when UNDEAD MUCH? comes out from Razorbill on January 21st.

On the other end of the reality spectrum, there’s Eileen Cook.  Eileen’s previous book WHAT WOULD EMMA DO? was both funny and genuine, full of real life dilemmas handled that we all go through, finding our footing in the place between what others expect of us, and what we want for ourselves. Perfect YA stuff. I anticipate more of the same from GETTING REVENGE ON LAUREN WOOD.

RCM: So, what’s the new book about?

Eileen CookLaurenEileen Cook: In the final weeks of eighth grade, Lauren Wood betrayed her best friend, Helen, in a manner so publicly humiliating, so horrid, that Helen had to move to a new town just to save face. Now at the start of her senior year, Lauren’s the cheerleading captain, the quarterback's girlfriend, and the undisputed queen bee. Lauren has everything she's ever wanted, and she has forgotten all about her ex-best friend.

But Helen never forgot Lauren. After three years of obsessing, she's moving back to her old town. She has a new name and a new look, but she hasn't dropped her old grudges. Lauren won't recognize her. She has a detailed plan to bring down her former BFF by taking away everything that's ever been important to Lauren—starting with her boyfriend.

RCM: I admit, I’ve obsessed about insults WAY too much. But I’m sure you never have. So, what was your inspiration?

Eileen Cook: I was an English major in college and I still have a lot of my old books. I recently re-read The Count of Monte Cristo. It has everything: best friends, betrayal, secret identifies, revenge, romance. I started to think how the story might play out in a modern high school.  The second inspiration came from the realization that almost everyone has been hurt by someone and dreamed of getting revenge. I think it is a universal experience.

RCM: I know a lot of authors include personal quirks in their books. Did any of your obsessions make it into the pages?

Eileen Cook: I made one of the characters, Christopher, someone who loves classic movies. I love old black and white films and the local theatre here shows them on the big screen one Saturday a month. Casablanca, anything with Audrey Hepburn- heaven.

RCM: Can’t argue with that, or with Meg Cabot, who calls Eileen’s writing “sassy and sly and sweet all at the same time.”  GETTING REVENGE ON LAUREN WOOD. comes out from Simon Pulse on January 5th.

FirespellBouncing back to the paranormal side, there’s FIRESPELL by Chloe Neill. Chloe writes urban fantasy for adults in the Chicagoland Vampires series, which you should check out if you like vampire books. But I am hotly anticipating her YA debut: “A new series about a boarding school filled with something worse than homework.”

When Lily is sent to a fancy-pants boarding school in Chicago, she discovers a group of rebel teens who fight to protect Chicago from demons, vampires and dark magic users. Lily would love to help them out, but she doesn’t have any superpowers… or does she? Really high quality writing and interesting characters, not to mention a unique voice set Chloe’s books apart.  Find out for yourself when Firespell comes out from Signet on January 5th.

IncarcionFrom the other side of the pond, we have a book by a celebrated Welsh novelist, Catherine FisherINCARCERON has been out in the UK for awhile, but it’s being released in the US. Finn is a 17-year-old prisoner in a prison so huge it contains forests and ruined cities and terrifying wilderness. He makes psychic contact with Claudia, the warden’s daughter, who is trapped in different kind of prison. Helping each other escape, will be perilous indeed. This is a stretch from the real-world based paranormal, and more of a high concept fantasy along the lines of Garth Nix (SABRIEL) and Nancy Farmer (THE HOUSE OF THE SCORPION). You can read for yourself on January 26th.

bleeding violetAnother fantasy getting buzz for being very different and well written is BLEEDING VIOLET, by debut author Dia Reeves. Hanna is an outcast, the ‘freak’, and she’s tired of it, so she runs away to Portero, Texas to live with her aunt. Only Portero is full of portals to other worlds, where there are monsters and things that would terrify any normal person. Fortunately, Hanna is nowhere near normal.

This one is very different. Dark, weird, sexy, it sort of plunges you into the tale and let’s you figure things out as you go along. Some people may not dig that, but it can make for a compelling read.  BLEEDING VIOLET comes out from Simon Pulse on January 5th.

There are just a few of the awesome books to start your new year! I hope yours is full of happiness and great reads!
