Kelley Armstrong | The Joys of Serialized Storytelling
January marks two big milestones in my e-serial writing career. On the 15th, I posted the prologue for the first e-serial in my YA series. And next week will see the release of Men of the Otherworld, containing three of my early e-serials (and a new story.)
For those who aren’t familiar with the term, an e-serial is a story published in segments on the internet. When I do them, I’m posting as I write, on a set schedule, usually a chapter every couple of weeks. There are ways to charge for the downloads, but most—like mine—are done as reader freebies.
I started writing e-serials shortly after launching my website in 2002. A web guru at my publisher suggested I find ways to make my site “sticky”—bring people back between books. It was a time in my life when I was looking for more storytelling opportunities. I’d finished maternity leave and decided to quit my job (two kids under the age of two plus a new career as a novelist meant something had to give.) I decided to write an e-serial novella for my site. I polled readers for a topic, then started Savage, a prequel telling the back-story of my male lead.
I loved the e-serials. They brought a freshness to writing that I missed, taking me back to the days when I’d show a work-in-progress to family and friends, getting that instant reader feedback and gut-reaction constructive criticism. They brought the reader into the process and they allowed me to tell stories I couldn’t do in the published series.
I also discovered that posting the stories free online didn’t satisfy every reader. I’ll be honest—I wasn’t comfortable with the idea of publishing these. They were meant to be a gift for readers. So I started saying “I’ll publish them when I’m in a position to do it as a charity endeavor.” That opportunity came last year, and when Men of the Otherworld comes out next week (and Tales of the Otherworld in 2010) all my proceeds will go to World Literacy of Canada. I get to re-gift these stories to a worthy cause, and that feels almost as good as writing them the first time.
I took a year off e-serial writing last year. Anyone who sees my publication schedule for 2009 will know why! But I started again this month, switching to my new young adult series, to give a little something extra to those readers. And I’m already having a blast, regretting that year off. Although e-serial writing isn’t for everyone, it’s something I’d urge writers to try. It may not pay the bills, but it pays off in so many other ways.

E-serializing sounds like fun. I'm not a writer, though I've toyed with the idea since I was a teen (over 20 years ago). I admit I don't have discipline, but writing a serial sounds more managable, at least to a beginner.
Thanx Kelley. I'll have to check out your site :)
This sounds like a great idea. Thank you for sharing your expertise and experience!
I loved reading the free stories about Jeremy and the other guys when they were on your web site, I'm so happy to see them in print. And I have to say, as someone who works in a Canadian public library- what a terrific charity to raise money for!
You had me at, "...and a new story by Jeremy." I have devoured your Underworld series and the new YA series, but I think I am anticipating the new Nadia most of all...Thanks for sharing with us.
The e-serials are how I discovered the Otherworld series originally, and I will always be glad I did. :D
As a reader, I love reading these serials! Thanks for writing them, Kelley! And how terrific that you're able to support such a good cause by publishing them in print now!
Hi Kelley,
E-serials. Though not e-serialized this brings to mind the good old days when they would put part of a story in the newspaper. And those small books King did like THE GREEN MILE. I am thrilled MEN OF THE OTHERWORLD is about to be released! My husband and I love your books! I need to read a few more books before MOTO but he doesn't. He's ready for it now! He's in the Navy and out to sea. If I don't win, you can be sure we'll get a copy of the book. I'd like to give it to him as a gift when he returns. Really nice to see you here.

sheesh, Kelley, I had to go out and devour everything you had on your site. I didn't know! I get your newsletter but I don't like to read excerpts too far out in advance when I can't get a book so I try to stay away from first chapters, etc on line and in the back of books.
But, sigh, I am weak. I said I try, didn't say I usually succeed. Anyway, read all the 2005 stories and now I've got an order in for the YA series too. Sheesh.
And you had me at Jeremy too. Not Clay so much, but Jeremy. He's delicious!
Thanks for being here and sharing!

Kelley, I am such a big fan. I've hooked both my teenage daughters on your books too. I'm buying the Men of the Otherworld whether I win a copy or not. It just means I won't have to share my copy. ::grin:: Is that bad?
Keep writing, Kelley and we'll keep reading!!! Congrats on the new release!
{hugs!}
~Paige :)
I have gone out and bought books by authors who have "free-reads" on their web site. Chances are I would never have bought them except for having had the opportunity to read a bit of their work before hand. In my case, at least, e-serializing really works!
Great post. I love your other books and cant wait to read Men of the Otherworld and their short stories.
E-serializing is a great way to entice readers. I'm so glad you do it when you can.
Can't wait to read Men of the Otherworld. You are a real storyteller!
The e-serial has been a huge part of why I return to your site, a wonderful idea! And an excellent way to get my Clay fix. :)
I have just finished Personal Demon yesterday, managed to pick it up at Christmas time. Wonderful summer reading!
Reading the blog today I learned something new...hadn't a clue about e-serials. It sounds to me like a great way to let a new to you reader get a feel for your books without having to put out the expense, and with everyone watching their budgets this year, I think it's going to be a win win....they'll discover you, and your readership will expand!
I love the idea behind E-serials. It sounds like a great way to 'give' something back to your readers, as well as possibly touch on things you might not touch on in your books. Allows you to give a characters story that may not be planned for in your series. (P.S. loving the fact that you are doing the e-serial on the Saunders site.)
..Ugh..I wish I could edit my own post. -sheepish smile- "Underworld,"...really....
I love reading serials, but I don't like to read e-books.
My eyes get very tired when I do that and I just love to see all those books on my bookshelf. :D
wooooohoooooooooo! I get my hands on more Clay this week!:D
Keep up the great work!
