Laura Griffin | A Romantic Thriller and a Chance to Win

People often ask me where I get story ideas. With my latest romantic suspense novel, THREAD OF FEAR, the idea took shape as I watched a news broadcast about a kidnapped girl. It wasn’t the kidnapping itself that caught my attention, but the forensic artist who helped solve the case.

How does a person interview a traumatized victim, and come away with a life-like picture of a criminal? This is the job of a forensic artist. They listen to people’s heart-wrenching stories and transform them into concrete leads for the police.

Fiona Glass’s talent at forensic art has made her the best in the business—which is why she’s quitting. She’s haunted by the stories of victims and the faces of sadistic criminals. She’s working on her last case when rugged Texas police chief Jack Bowman bulldozes over her resistance and convinces her to help him hunt down a serial killer who is terrorizing his small town.

Jack never intended for Fiona to become so involved in his case. Or in his life. But he knows she’s his best hope for finding a psychopath who’s lurking in plain sight. He desperately needs Fiona’s help, but he never counted on her ending up in the killer’s crosshairs.

If you like a spine-tingling mystery, as well as a love story, I hope you’ll enjoy THREAD OF FEAR.

Laura, "Thread of Fear" sounds incredibly suspenseful, and I love me a good romantic suspense novel. I think it makes the situation more intense and you can get more caught up in the story.

I totally enjoyed your first two books, Laura. You do such a great job of building suspense AND creating powerful love stories. How do you balance the two?
I'm really looking forward to THREAD OF FEAR.

Hi Stacy! That's the reason I like romantic suspense. Love plus danger is a good combo for me when I curl up with a book. Hope you'll enjoy Thread of Fear!

Thanks, Jane! I'm so glad you liked the first two books. Balancing the suspense and the love story is the fun part, I think. Whenever you get to a quiet moment with one part of the story, you can focus on the other. I think it keeps the pace moving. Thanks for posting! And I hope you'll enjoy THREAD OF FEAR!

Loved your first two books Laura, "One Last Breath" and "One Wrong Step". Even got a couple friends hooked on them too. Your writing is so clean but the story and characters are so vivid and engaging- it's a hard combo to resist!
I hope you're going to continue that first series as well since it seemed like there was at least one more likely couple emerging from "One Wrong Step" . . .

Hi Kate!
Thanks for the encouragement! I'm so pleased you enjoyed the first two books. Some people have asked about the characters Kate and Rowe from ONE WRONG STEP, and I'd love to write their story someday. I'll keep you posted via the web site.
Hope you enjoy THREAD OF FEAR!

Laura, Wow! This is great. I loved your first two books. Your characters seem like real people that I can relate to. How do you go about building character? Do you base your characters on people you actually know? Wondering, Jen

Hi Laura,

"One Wrong Step" was my first thriller romance. Until that, I couldn't understand why anyone would combine thriller with romance. Now I know. I intend to take "Thread of Fear" with me to Mexico where I can stay up half the night and read if I desire.

Thanks for your writing efforts. I know that getting a book written, edited, and published is a lot of work.

Hi Robin,
Thanks for reading ONE WRONG STEP! I think romantic suspense is addictive. Definitely a good type of book to take on vacation. Enjoy Mexico and thanks for taking THREAD OF FEAR along with you! Drink a margarita for me while you're there. :-)

Hi Jen,
Thanks for posting! Some of my characters and events are inspired by real people or things I read in the news. In the case of THREAD OF FEAR, the heroine was inspired by a forensic artist in Texas. I interviewed her during the research phase, and it's a fascinating career. It was fun for me to write about. Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoy the next one!

Hi Laura,

I devoured ONE LAST BREATH in a day. You craft a beautiful story, and I'm looking forward to THREAD OF FEAR.

How do you research for your stories?

Hi Nicole,
You're a fast reader! I'm glad you liked ONE LAST BREATH. For research, I go back to my journalism roots. I often just pick up the phone and talk to an expert in something, or maybe ask questions by e-mail. I love face-to-face interviews with people because you get so much more vivid detail that comes in handy when writing a story. I interviewed a number of forensic artists for THREAD OF FEAR, and I learned so much. Hope you'll like the book!

Anne Marie,
I was happy Romantic Times ran that story because there's a lot of fascination about anything "forensic" these days, but forensic art isn't widely known about. I hope you'll enjoy THREAD OF FEAR. Thanks for posting!

Hi Laura!
I whirled through your first two books. You never fail to amaze me with your writing. I'm currently in the middle of THREAD OF FEAR and I LOVE IT. I'm so excited to finish it. I'm actually doing a report for school on ONE WRONG STEP. Any comments on how you got that book started?
