Sandi Shilhanek | The Book Search
This week my friend Yvonne has been visiting from England. One of the things that we try to accomplish when she visits is to see how many bookstores we can peruse in the Dallas area. Often while we are in the bookstore Yvonne’s cell phone will ring, and it will be another friend of ours from Hawaii.
The conversation almost always starts with what book are you looking at? Does it look good? Oh, I think I might want a copy of it too. Yvonne being the generous sort is always willing to contribute to someone else’s tbr pile, so we add book upon book to the basket we’re toting, and eventually try to head to the checkout stand.
So last spring Yvonne is in Dallas visiting, and the phone call comes. This time it’s slightly different. I’d like a book that I think is red, it might have heart in the title and might have been written by someone named Kane, or is it Cain, is that a first or last name? She had no clue! How in the world did she expect us to find this book?
Well, Yvonne is nothing if not determined, and I’m not far behind her when the mood strikes. We were a sight to be seen scouring the stores looking for a book. The salespeople were trying to be helpful, but we’re like we have very little information, and don’t think you can help us with what we have.
Did we ever find the book? We did! Are you as surprised about that as we were? How did it happen you may ask? We were in line to check out, and Yvonne did a quick check of a bargain book table, and there was a red book with the title Heartsick, and the author’s name was Chelsea Cain. We had no idea whether it was the correct book or not, but thought we had nothing to lose by buying it. As it turned out it was the correct book, we lucked out!
So, have you ever tried to search out a book with little to no information about it? Were you as successful as Yvonne and I were? Did you give up the search? If you gave up the search did you ever end up finding the book?

I really wanted a copy of 'Water for Elephants' It hadn't been published in the UK, so I asked my husband to get it for me when he went on a business trip to the US. He got to the bookshop, and realised he'd left the title back in his hotel room. He couldn't quite remember which animal was in the title -so he asked the shop assistant if they had any books with rhinos or elephants or hippos in the title!! Luckily he came back with the right book! He's great!
Thanks to the internet I don't have to much of a problem finding a book. As long I know at least the title or author I can look it up on the net and then search for it in the stores. If it's not in the stores, I go back to the net and get it from there. Without the net I would be lost in finding a book.
I'm not sure I have ever looked for a book with next to no information. If you have title or author it isn't usually to hard! If you have neither that is a huge challenge with all the books that are published. On older book without author or title would be almost impossible, in my humble opinion!!
I hope you and Yvonne are having fun.
Owning an online book store, I have strange requests all the time. I love to hunt for odd, old or just hard to find books. I also will search for books where the customer just has the story line and not the title or author. I make out these really great list and then half the time I leave them in the car so I am usually hunting from memory. Thank God I have one. Even if I just find two or three on the list, I feel I have had a very good day.
I used to work for a B. Dalton's book store and then Virgin Megastores in the book section... The requests I would get for some books always kept the job interesting. LOL Thank goodness I knew my shelves intimately, and knew how to use our look up computer, wheather it was to look up inventory or published books, I usually to give my customers a point in the right direction. About the only time I failed them was in the computer section.... Ohhh, the books there!!!!
I was in a mystery book store in Delray Beach Florida and I couldn't remember the name of the author I was looking for. I did remember that she wrote a mystery bood about a Vet and a dog. Sorry to say they had no idea what I was talking about. When I got home from Florida and checked my 'Favorites' list I found it. A Nose for Trouble by Doranna Durgin. I think I will be able to remember it the next time! :>)
Sorry about the typo - book not bood!
What a terrific story. I've never had to find a book on little information. Great sleuthing on the part of you and Yvonne.
I seem to have this problem all the time; I make lists and then leave them at home or in the car! This is complicated by the fact that it can be hard to find romance in bookstores in San Francisco. Especially used bookstores.
Great story, Sandi! I thought you'd probably found the book by having ths store search for the author's name, using either Cain or Kane.
But how fun that it was total serendity! That's much better, a bit of a Christmas miracle.
