Tawny Weber | Spontaneous Goal Setting

Before the confetti settles, the champagne bottles are tossed into the recycling bin and the sound of fireworks dies away, talk turns to that time-honored New Years tradition... Resolutions.

Or, as I prefer, setting goals. I love goal setting. I’m big on writing lists and color-coding is definitely my friend. There’s something so satisfying about making a plan, setting a goal, and then working through the steps to see it become a reality. Call me a control freak, but it’s the only way I feel like I have much say in this crazy roller coaster that is life.

Isabel Santos, the heroine in my January Blaze, DOES SHE DARE? is exactly the same. She’s all about success and has not only a yearly goal list, but a five year, ten year and life goal list. Wow, even *I’m* not that obsessive. Then again, as goal focused as I am, even I wouldn’t write a Man Plan. But Isabel did. She based her plan on the hottest guy she’d ever known, listed her ultimate sexual fantasies, and created a set of rules to let her maintain control.

This got me to thinking. My planning and goal setting bleeds into every aspect of my life. When I travel, I make a packing list. I write menus for the week so I know what to get at the grocery store. As a writer, I have a career plan and am a die-hard plotter. I can’t imagine doing it any other way. And while this works great for me, I’m a little envious of those totally spontaneous people out there who decide on Saturday morning to take a trip and toss a few things in a tote before running out the door to destination unknown. The pantzers who write with the assured faith that the story they are writing is going to unfold beautifully for them as they go along.

For me, as there was for Isabel in DOES SHE DARE?, goal setting is vital. But that total focus on the goal has some definite pitfalls (as Isabel finds out!). And then there are those spontaneous types who simply live for the moment. Like Isabel’s hero, Dante Luciano. People like Dante have an awareness of opportunity that many goal setters don’t. It’s like a special sense that lets them grab onto a random happening and turn it into a huge success. They don’t need goals or resolutions, they simply make the most of whatever comes their way. And boy does he make the most of what comes HIS way!

Hmmm, ya think that created a few sparks when a total goal setter finds out the object of her Ultimate Man Plan is so spontaneous he travels with just what he can fit in his Harley’s saddlebags. Definitely!! What’s even more fun than watching Dante rearrange Isabel’s plans is watching the two of them fall in love.

My plan for the New Year is to embrace it all – goal setting AND to be more open to opportunities. It’s going to be all about flexibility –which is what both Dante and Isabel had to learn (and no, I don’t just mean to have the wild love scene on the Harley like they did *g* although flexibility did come in mighty handy then, now that I think about it).

How about you? Are you a planner or totally spontaneous? Or maybe like I’d like to be –somewhere in between? Do you make New Year’s Resolutions or set goals? Or do you simply take it as it comes, with that extra awareness of opportunities?

Tawny Weber’s latest Blaze, DOES SHE DARE? is in stores now. Tawny’s so into goal setting, she and her awesome CP, Beth Andrew’s even giving a workshop on it for From the Heart Romance Writers, http://www.fthrw.com/ starting early January. She’s also hosting a chat on http://www.eharlequin.com/ to discuss the Ultimate Man Plan and how to create your fantasy guy. And you can check out more goal setting tips at www.TawnyWeber.com/goals

I'm definitely a planner and I married a pantser. Sigh.

We go on a trip and I make my packing list. He throws a few things in the suitcase. One time he dared me to not make the list. I forgot to pack underwear.

ROFL Lisa... hey, a no underwear trip could be VERY interesting!!

My husband's the same though- a total non-planner. Somehow it all balances though - huh?

Aww...I think you're pretty awesome too *g* And you know I'm somewhere between a planner and spontaneous although I do love setting goals! But there are times when you just have to go with the flow :-)

And let me just say that Does She Dare is an awesome story and Dante is not only flexible, but he's super hot ;-)

Hello, Tawny, my Bandita Friend!!! Great blog. I'm a mixture of planner and pantser. I like to know what's coming up but I also like to leave room for those amazing bits of serendipity that come up every so often. But as I've got older, I've definitely started to make lists. My memory is a steel trap - a rusty one! Love the sound of DOES SHE DARE? How sexy is that premise? And that cover should have a PG warning on it!!! Good luck with your goals this year. If it involves giving me more of your wonderful books to read, I will have no complaints!

Hey Tawny - Loved "Does She Dare?" Another keeper!

I'm kind of a mixture too. I plan the key things and then allow room to go with the flow of serendipity!

And colour coding?! I hate to say it, but it's creeping in to my life. I blame the fact that I was once a teacher ... not the influence of a certain someone!

Hey Tawny! I've got my copy of Does She Dare sitting on the TBR pile on my desk! That's the MUST read pile, the one in my bedroom, is a read when the MUST pile is low pile!! I guess that's a plan of sorts.

I'm a mixture of planning and spontaneous action. At work I get a list of my patients and make a plan how to give the best care in the most efficient manner, but sometimes those plans change at a second's notice, (bags of water break, people starte to contract, babies decide to come NOW, etc...).

Same goes for writing. I start out with two characters, an inciting incident and how I think the dark moment should go. Then the characters take over and bam, the heroine's pointing a gun at the hero and I'm saying, "whoa, now what do I do?"

Hey Tawny!
Another Bandita swooping in to say WOOT! Congrats on you latest release and on your upcoming ones. If you are an example of career planning and goal setting, we would all do well to follow your lead!

Actually, I was a HUGE goal setter in my previous career and am now trying to carry over into my writing. I'm also trying to learn to be more of a plotter since I hope to be selling on proposal in the very near future!

Here's to a GREAT 2008 for everyone!

Beth, going with the flow is DEFINITELY important. I think there is a big difference between being a planner and being a total-0ver-the-top-control-freak (I've teetered on the line so I'd know *g*) Dante IS hot, isn't he? Yum-o!

Anna and Anna LOL!!! HI :-) As much as I love to plan, I admit it, I'm big on leaving a lot open to 'fate' or my Muse. I just need a direction... and now that I think about Lisa's comment, underwear!
and Anna - you KNOW you love those influences ;-) YAY for the color (or is it colour?) coding!

Hi, Tawny, great topic of conversation. Sorry I'm late to the party, but today's been a hellacious day! Are you getting any of that windy, rainy storm that's sweeping our area?

Hmmm, I love to make lists. Sometimes I write items on my list just for the fun of crossing them off. Makes me feel like I've accomplished something.

But as for writing, I'm much more a pantser. I really have to wait for the characters to tell me something, knock me over the head with a 2 by 4 or slap me upside the head. I try to plot, outline, plan, but the story just has a mind of its own most of the time.

But I like the idea that non-list makers are those who see the possibilities in a spontaneous event and ride the wave!

Suz, you're such a sweetie -thank you! I'm honored to be on your TBR pile LOL. I'm also in awe of what you do, and having given birth twice now, very very grateful ;-) I'm coming to find that a lot of us are the plantzer types. We map out certain aspects of the story, but leave plenty of room for our characters to direct things :-)

AC, my awesome Bandita pal (Romance Bandits rock!!!)You're so gonna be selling on proposal -- no problem! You're right that it really helps to at least do a little planning to do that, though.

Hi Jo. Yes, its pouring and blowing here, too. UGLY weather, huh? I'm giggling at your lists of things you want to cross off, cause I do that too. There is something really empowering to see that yes, despite still being in jammies at 2pm, with no apparent accomplishments, there is much that has been done ;-) Happy wave riding LOL!!

Tawny, it's great to see you here! I like to think I am somewhere in between, but in actuality goals give me hives. *g*

That is not to say I don't *have* goals, because I do. But I don't want to write them down, chart them or put them on index cards. Ack! I simply want to work diligently toward them and smile to myself when I make progress.

I can't wait to read about Isabel, though. She is so different from me, I will love to get inside her brain! Maybe she'll inspire me to write things down or something. Then again, maybe not! LOL!

Hi Tawny -

Well - I'm an accountant. If you're born with spontaneity, the profession will bleed it right out of you. It's built on black & white checklists and rule books. But here's the thing - between my husband and I, I'm the spontaneous one *g* - though I can't imagine just throwing a few things in a tote bag. I'd pack the bag days in advance and then forget to pack it in the car.

I LOVE the premise of Does She Dare... and the sexy cover doesn't hurt one bit *g*

Hi, Tawny--

I make plans, rather than resolutions, since naming them something firm doesn't seem to help me keep them. I do better just checking my progress regularly. *sigh* I looove color-coding. I really get into it, only to disregard it later. Your form seems more effective.

Isabel sounds like a very disciplined person! I'm looking forward to reading about her.

Caren, as much as I believe in the power of the written word (and the written goal *g*) just having a direction is usually enough to stir up all that 'achievement' energy and make things happen :-)

You'll have to let me know if Isabel sparks any ideas... although for her, writing down (and color coding, ahem) her goals did get her into a whole lot of hot water LOL

Donna, did I ever tell you I took bookkeeping classes in college? They scared the hell out of me LOL.

Thanks for the wonderful support of Does She Dare? and to all my awesome Bandita pals - you gals are incredible!!!

Nancy :-) I so agree with you on the resolution thing. I just don't do them. To resolve always means to give something up to me - no clue why. But a goal... well, thats a destination, right? As long as we pack the undies, we're great for traveling toward it!!
(or not, I suppose. Ya know, that could be a fun story idea!!)

All you gals who haven't read/finished Does She Dare? are in for a treat.

Too funny about you and hubby, Donna. And Tawny, those bookkeeping classes boggle my mind.

Ironically, when I took my CBEST test to be a teacher, I scored higher on the math portion than the language part. I guess I have a math brain, but language interest! Taught math one year and that's all it took! Yuck!

Oooh, Jo, I love math. Especially algebra, with its logic. But I hate rules LOL. But like you, my interest has always been in english - my creative writing classes were always my best grades LOL.

And thank you SO much for reading Does She Dare? I'm so happy you liked it!!
