Ever Read the Award winners?

I guess this goes along with the movies too, but how does knowing a book took a prize affect your consideration of the book?

I just posted the 2005 RWA RITA(tm) winners here and I found that only a few had been entered in the database at all -- which means no one else requested them in the past year. Odd, don't you think? And when I entered them, a good third are no longer in print (the category ones) with no plans to reissue them -- even a small print run. So what's the point? I don't mean this in a mean way, but is it just a small pat on the head? I'm confused (and have been about this for years).

If a movie is nominated for Golden Globes or Oscars or even Palm de Ore (spelled wrong I'm sure, but too busy to go and look it up at the moment), they release, perhaps in small theaters, but at least they do in the big cities, so viewers have the opportunity to go out and check it out. Sorry, cash in on the award so to speak. But the Ritas don't make that happen at all. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

Anyway, I only read two books of the winners and never heard of half of them, and you all know how much I read or at least know about books. It's a mystery, I tell you!

I wouldn't even know where to look to find the award winners Sara. So that tells you how much I pay attention to them. I think it is a great idea to award the best of the best, but does that affect what I read? Honestly? Not one bit. I read all sorts of stuff, though not as much of the books I'd normally read by choice anymore since I do so much reviewing. but I've found great new authors and books by getting review books I'd never have picked on my own. But I never even go look to see who won the awards in the categories. I get excited for my friends who win, and for my favorite authors in addition to those friends but usually I've read pretty much what I wanted to out of the award winners already. More often then not I find that over half the books even nominated, let alone winning, I've never even heard of.

When I found out who the winners were, I thought exactly the same thing. Apart from Crusie, Kinsale and Macaulay, I wasn't familiar with any of the other winners.

It's just as well I don't really pay that much attention to award winners isn't it?

Yes, sometimes you do get a few new books to at least consider, but I've noticed with the Ritas over the years, the winners are books and authors I've never heard of before and when I go look them up, I'm still not terribly intrigued.

And what about the new "quill awards" the ones to be announced in October? On television a week after they're given? It's hard to even find a roster of the finalists LOL plus it's really the publishers nominating.
